They weave narratives on the ice, transporting audiences to different worlds with every jump and spin. But how do they embody these characters and breathe life into their programs?

Taking Acting to the Ice

Many skaters are finding that acting classes are a valuable tool. Lorine Schild, a French skater known for her dramatic programs, incorporates weekly theatre sessions into her training regimen. These classes help her develop the emotional range and expressiveness needed to truly captivate viewers.

Learning from the Masters

For some skaters, inspiration comes from directly observing the characters they portray. Rebecca Ghilardi and Filippo Ambrosini, Italian skaters performing a “Moulin Rouge!”-inspired program, sought extra inspiration by attending the Broadway musical. They studied the movements and mannerisms of the characters to bring authenticity to their on-ice performance.

Drawing from the Big Screen

Movies can also be a rich source of inspiration. Lukas Vaclavik, a Slovakian skater, has incorporated music from films like “The Godfather” and “Sherlock Holmes” into his programs. This season, his free skate is set to the soundtrack of “The Truman Show,” and he’s even incorporated a gesture from the movie into his choreography.

Literary Inspiration

Books can spark a skater’s creativity as well. French skater Kevin Aymoz drew profound inspiration from the novel “The Song of Achilles” for a past gladiator-themed program. The story’s emotional depth resonated with him, and he sought to translate that feeling onto the ice.

A Multifaceted Approach

Skating programs are a blend of artistic interpretation and athletic prowess. By delving into acting classes, studying their characters, and finding inspiration from various sources, skaters are elevating their performances and forging a deeper connection with the audience. Their dedication to storytelling makes figure skating a truly captivating sport.

By Vitalina Andrushchenko, Staff Writer

Figure skaters are more than just athletes; they’re storytellers.
