This homecoming story highlights Freij’s determination and the Jets’ eye for talent.

A Dream Realized

The 18-year-old Swedish defenseman wasn’t a stranger to Winnipeg. As a child, he participated in hockey tournaments there, sparking his dream of one day playing in the NHL. Years later, that dream came true when the Jets called his name at the draft.

Memories Made

Freij vividly remembers his childhood visit to Winnipeg, a memory that was reignited when his father shared a photo from that time. The Jets’ social media team even shared a heartwarming comparison of Freij then and now, standing in the same spot almost a decade later.

Driven by Dreams

Freij’s experience wasn’t unique. He recalls how he and his teammates aspired to reach the NHL after witnessing professional players firsthand. The draft saw his childhood dream come true, while his friend Herman Traff was drafted by the New Jersey Devils and another teammate, Joel Svensson, by the Chicago Blackhawks.

A Surreal Moment

The draft itself was a whirlwind for Freij. He describes the moment his name was called as a dreamlike experience, a culmination of years of hard work and dedication.

Early Promise

The Jets were impressed by Freij’s skating ability and his performance in Europe’s junior league. General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff highlighted the young prospect’s potential and the excitement surrounding his development.

A Look Ahead

Freij spent last season in Sweden’s junior league and helped his country win bronze at the U18 World Junior Championship. While acknowledging a focus on offensive play and a strong shot, he recognizes the need to improve his defensive game and physicality as he prepares to play in Sweden’s second-tier professional league next season.

Jets See Long-Term Potential

While Freij is expected to develop further in Sweden, the Jets clearly have high hopes for their young prospect. Freij’s dedication to improvement and the Jets’ commitment to his development bode well for a bright future in Winnipeg.

Alfons Freij’s hockey journey took an exciting turn when he was drafted by the Winnipeg Jets in the second round of the 2024 NHL Draft.
