The opening moments of a figure skating program are crucial. They set the tone, capture the audience’s attention, and establish the narrative for the entire performance. For skaters seeking to make a lasting impression, a strong and memorable start is essential. Here are some creative ideas to elevate your program’s opening:

1. The Dramatic Entrance: Building Anticipation

Consider a powerful entrance that immediately draws the audience in. This could involve a slow, deliberate glide across the ice, a dramatic pose held for a few seconds, or a sudden burst of speed. Use the music to guide your movements and create a sense of anticipation. A well-timed spotlight or lighting change can further enhance the dramatic effect. Think about incorporating an element of surprise or intrigue to pique the audience’s curiosity.

2. The Character Introduction: Establishing Narrative

If your program tells a story or portrays a specific character, use the opening to introduce that narrative. This could involve a gesture, facial expression, or movement that reveals the character’s personality or emotional state. A prop or costume element can also be used to establish the setting or context of the story. Think about how you can visually communicate the essence of your character or story within the first few seconds of your performance.

3. The Musical Prelude: Setting the Mood

Use the music’s introduction to create a specific atmosphere or mood. This could involve a slow, graceful movement for a lyrical piece or a sharp, dynamic movement for a more energetic piece. Pay attention to the nuances of the music and use your body language to reflect the emotions and rhythms. Consider using a specific skating element, like a spiral or a deep edge, to visually represent the musical phrasing.

4. The Unexpected Element: Grabbing Attention

Incorporate an unexpected element into your opening to create a memorable moment. This could involve a unique movement, a creative transition, or a surprising costume reveal. Think outside the box and experiment with different ideas to find something that sets your program apart. However, be mindful that the unexpected element should complement the overall theme and style of your program.

5. The Connection with the Audience: Engaging from the Start

Establish a connection with the audience from the very beginning. This could involve direct eye contact, a warm smile, or a gesture that acknowledges their presence. By engaging with the audience, you can create a more personal and intimate performance. Think about how you can use your body language and facial expressions to convey emotion and connect with the audience on a deeper level.

6. The Technical Showcase: Displaying Skill

For skaters who want to highlight their technical abilities, the opening can be a great opportunity to showcase a challenging element. This could involve a difficult jump, spin, or footwork sequence. However, ensure that the technical element is seamlessly integrated into the choreography and doesn’t feel forced or out of place.

Remember, the most effective openings are those that are authentic and reflect your unique style as a skater. Experiment with different ideas, find what resonates with you, and create an opening that leaves a lasting impression.
