For the second straight year, the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers face off in the Stanley Cup Final, a rematch of last season’s thrilling seven-game series won by Florida. NHL.com’s panel of 16 writers and editors is evenly divided, with eight favoring the Panthers to repeat as champions and eight backing the Oilers to exact revenge starting in June 2025. The Conn Smythe Trophy, awarded to the playoff MVP, sees Edmonton’s Connor McDavid as the favorite with seven votes, followed by Florida’s Aleksander Barkov and Sergei Bobrovsky with four each, and Leon Draisaitl with one.

A Rivalry Renewed

The 2024 Final saw Florida jump to a 3-0 lead before Edmonton battled back, forcing a Game 7 that ended in a 2-1 Panthers victory. This year, both teams return with enhanced rosters and lessons learned. Florida, seeking to cement a dynasty, added defenseman Seth Jones from Chicago for mobility and scoring, and forward Brad Marchand from Boston for depth and grit alongside star Matthew Tkachuk. Edmonton, driven by last year’s heartbreak, boasts a tighter defensive structure and relies on McDavid and Draisaitl’s offensive brilliance, though they face a setback with forward Zach Hyman sidelined by an upper-body injury.

NHL.com’s split predictions reflect the matchup’s intensity. Writers like Brian Compton and Nicholas J. Cotsonika pick Florida in six, citing their physical edge (812 playoff hits vs. Edmonton’s 648) and Bobrovsky’s superior goaltending (1.34 GAA, .944 save percentage since May 10). Others, like Tom Gulitti and Dan Rosen, favor Edmonton in six, pointing to McDavid’s hunger and the team’s improved depth, drawing parallels to the 2009 Penguins’ redemption against Detroit. The series, starting June 4 in Edmonton, promises a clash of styles: Florida’s relentless forecheck versus Edmonton’s high-octane offense.
