Nicklas Backstrom<\/a>, a cornerstone of the Washington Capitals\u2019 legacy, is returning to his roots with a renewed sense of purpose. The 37-year-old center, who last played in the NHL during the 2023-24 season, signed a one-year contract with Bryn\u00e4s IF of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL) on July 28, 2025, marking a heartfelt homecoming to the club where his professional career began. After nearly two seasons sidelined by a chronic hip injury, Backstrom is \u201cincredibly energized\u201d to lace up his skates again in his hometown of G\u00e4vle, Sweden, aiming to contribute to Bryn\u00e4s\u2019 pursuit of success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Career Defined by Resilience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Backstrom\u2019s journey has been one of perseverance through physical challenges. He underwent hip resurfacing surgery on June 17, 2022, at the ANCA Clinic in Belgium, following years of hip issues that began flaring up in the 2020-21 season. After returning to play 39 games in 2022-23, scoring 21 points (seven goals, 14 assists), he declared himself \u201c100 percent\u201d at the 2023-24 training camp. However, after just eight games that season, culminating in a 3-1 win against the San Jose Sharks on October 29, 2023, Backstrom stepped away, citing an \u201congoing injury situation\u201d with his left hip. \u201cIt\u2019s been a couple of tough years in terms of injuries,\u201d Backstrom admitted, \u201cbut now my body feels great.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Homecoming to Bryn\u00e4s<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Returning to Bryn\u00e4s, where he played from 2004-07 before joining the Capitals, fulfills a long-held dream for Backstrom. \u201cI\u2019ve always felt like a return to Bryn\u00e4s was in the cards should the opportunity present itself,\u201d he said during a press conference in G\u00e4vle. The one-year deal, with an option for a second season, allows Backstrom to ease back into competitive play, potentially starting with limited games until Christmas. Bryn\u00e4s, fresh off a first-place SHL regular-season finish in 2024-25, welcomes Backstrom\u2019s leadership alongside former NHL talents like Jakob Silfverberg and Christian Djoos. \u201cWe\u2019ve always had a hope to see Nicklas represent Bryn\u00e4s again,\u201d said general manager Johan Alc\u00e9n, praising his role-model qualities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Legendary Capitals Career<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Backstrom\u2019s 18-year tenure with the Washington Capitals cemented his status as a franchise icon. Selected fourth overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, he ranks second in Capitals history with 1,033 points (271 goals, 762 assists) in 1,105 regular-season games, leading the franchise in assists. His 23 points (five goals, 18 assists) in the 2018 playoffs were pivotal in securing Washington\u2019s first Stanley Cup. Backstrom\u2019s chemistry with Alex Ovechkin, assisting on 279 of Ovechkin\u2019s record-breaking 897 goals, defined an era. \u201cHe was such a big part of my success,\u201d Ovechkin said emotionally after Backstrom attended his record-setting game in April 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
