Victor Hedman, the Tampa Bay Lightning’s stalwart defenseman, has conquered nearly every pinnacle in hockey: two Stanley Cups, a 2018 Norris Trophy as the NHL’s top defenseman, and a 2020 Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. Yet, one ambition has remained unfulfilled—until now. In February 2026, Hedman will make his Olympic debut for Sweden at the Milano Cortina Winter Games, a milestone he calls a lifelong dream. For fans inspired to pursue fitness goals in Hedman’s spirit, consult your doctor before starting any new exercise program, especially if you have health concerns.

A Lifelong Aspiration

At 34, Hedman views the Olympics as a rare opportunity, possibly his last, to don the Tre Kronor jersey on the global stage. “It’s something I’ve always dreamed of,” he said at a Stockholm briefing on August 6, 2025, organized by the Swedish Ice Hockey Association and Swedish Olympic Committee. “Many players never get this chance, and I’m not taking it for granted.” The prospect of sharing the Olympic village with athletes from diverse sports excites him, promising a “unique and fun” experience, as he shared in a 2025 NHL.com interview.

Sweden’s Preliminary Roster Star

On June 16, 2025, Hedman was named to Sweden’s preliminary Olympic roster alongside Buffalo Sabres defenseman Rasmus Dahlin, Toronto Maple Leafs forward William Nylander, Detroit Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond, Los Angeles Kings forward Adrian Kempe, and Colorado Avalanche forward Gabriel Landeskog. This marks the NHL’s return to the Olympics after a 12-year absence, with players last competing in 2014. Hedman, who missed the 2018 and 2022 Games due to NHL non-participation, brings a stellar record: 794 points (171 goals, 623 assists) in 1,131 NHL games and a 2017 World Championship gold, per Hockey-Reference data.

Insights from Stockholm

The August 6 meeting in Stockholm, attended by around 30 Swedish players, offered a glimpse into the Olympic journey ahead. Hedman described it as “incredibly informative,” gaining clarity on logistics and expectations. Among the media’s focus group, only Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson, a 2014 Sochi silver medalist, has Olympic experience, underscoring the rarity of the opportunity. Young talents like Lucas Raymond, 23, who notched 80 points in 2024-25, expressed awe at joining veterans like Hedman, citing iconic moments like Nicklas Lidstrom’s 2006 Torino goal, as noted in a 2025 Expressen report.
