Between the loud bangs of the puck against the boards and the blur of skaters, you\u2019ll hear coaches and players yelling about &#8220;apples,&#8221; &#8220;biscuits,&#8221; and &#8220;five-holes.&#8221; To help you navigate your next game\u2014whether you&#8217;re in the stands or on the bench\u2014here is a breakdown of the essential terminology every beginner needs to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Anatomy of the Game<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you can master the slang, you have to understand the basic mechanics and rules that govern the flow of play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Faceoff:<\/strong>\u00a0How every game and play begins. Two players face each other, and the referee drops the puck between them to battle for possession.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Crease:<\/strong>\u00a0The blue semi-circle in front of the net. This is the goalie&#8217;s &#8220;home.&#8221; If an attacking player enters this area before the puck, the goal may be disallowed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Icing:<\/strong>\u00a0When a player shoots the puck from their own side of the center red line all the way past the opponent&#8217;s goal line without anyone touching it. An attacking player cannot enter the offensive zone (past the blue line) before the puck does.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Power Play vs. Penalty Kill:<\/strong>\u00a0When a team takes a penalty, they are sent to the &#8220;Sin Bin&#8221; (penalty box). Here are the most common terms you\u2019ll hear in the locker room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Flow \/ Lettuce:<\/strong>\u00a0References to a player&#8217;s hair, especially when it sticks out and flows from beneath the helmet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The Biscuit:<\/strong>\u00a0Slang for the puck. &#8220;Put the biscuit in the basket&#8221; means score a goal!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Apple:<\/strong>\u00a0An assist. If you set up your teammate for a goal, you just earned yourself an apple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Five-Hole:<\/strong>\u00a0The space between a goalie\u2019s leg pads. It is a prime target for shooters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Celly:<\/strong>\u00a0Short for &#8220;celebration.&#8221; This is what you do after you score that &#8220;Gino&#8221; (goal).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mitts:<\/strong>\u00a0A player&#8217;s hands or gloves. Having &#8220;soft mitts&#8221; means you have great stickhandling skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Chirp:<\/strong>\u00a0Trash talk.
