A named skill, often called an eponymous skill<\/strong>, is a gymnastics element that carries the surname of the first gymnast who successfully performs it at an official FIG competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once approved, the skill is permanently listed in the FIG Code of Points and may be used by gymnasts around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some named skills remain among the most difficult elements in the sport decades after they were introduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Does a Skill Become Official?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Creating a completely new element requires much more than inventing a difficult movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A gymnast must submit the skill before competition according to FIG procedures. The element is then evaluated by the Women’s or Men’s Technical Committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the gymnast performs the skill successfully during an eligible FIG competition, such as the Olympic Games, World Championships, Youth Olympic Games, World Cup, or other approved international events, and the committee determines that it is genuinely new, the gymnast’s surname is added to the Code of Points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If another gymnast performs the same skill first at an approved event, that gymnast receives the official recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
