The 17-year-old won the&nbsp;<strong>Kinoshita Group Cup 2026<\/strong>&nbsp;in Tokyo with a personal-best&nbsp;<strong>231.32 points<\/strong>, defeating two Olympic medallists on her senior international debut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Record-Breaking Debut<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shimada entered senior competition with enormous expectations after an extraordinary junior career. She had won&nbsp;<strong>all 39 junior events<\/strong>&nbsp;she entered \u2014 an unbeaten record that made her transition to the senior level one of the most anticipated debuts of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She delivered when it mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the short program, Shimada produced a powerful free skate to finish more than&nbsp;<strong>10 points ahead of Alexandra Ignatova<\/strong>, the Beijing 2022 Olympic silver medallist, who scored 221.06.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic bronze medallist&nbsp;<strong>Nakai Ami<\/strong>&nbsp;had led after the short program but fell to fourth after the free skate with 207.72.&nbsp;<strong>Anna Frolova<\/strong>&nbsp;took bronze with 207.86.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Mao Shimada (78.84 SP) || Kinoshita Group Cup\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/YYb1nFTl0mU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">\u00a9 YouTube \/\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@OutstandingSkaters\">Outstanding Skaters<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Two Huge Jumps In One Program<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The highlight of Shimada\u2019s free skate was not only the victory but the technical difficulty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She became the&nbsp;<strong>first Japanese senior woman to land both a triple Axel and a quadruple toe loop in the same program<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her triple Axel had received a downgrade in the short program, but she said she felt confident about the jump in the free skate. The quadruple toe loop had also been feeling strong throughout her preparation in Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That combination of difficult elements and composure under pressure helped turn her senior debut into a historic performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ignatova\u2019s Long-Awaited Return<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The competition also marked a major comeback for&nbsp;<strong>Alexandra Ignatova<\/strong>, competing internationally for the first time in four years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 22-year-old Olympic silver medallist immediately showed her trademark technical ambition by landing a&nbsp;<strong>quadruple Lutz<\/strong>&nbsp;in her&nbsp;<em>Stranger Things<\/em>-themed program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ignatova finished second with 221.06. Rather than looking too far ahead, however, she emphasized the reality of returning to competition after a long absence: she is no longer the skater she was four years ago and wants to build from where she is now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Comes Next?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shimada\u2019s senior campaign is only beginning. She is scheduled to compete at&nbsp;<strong>Skate Canada<\/strong>&nbsp;and the&nbsp;<strong>Finlandia Trophy<\/strong>as part of the Grand Prix Series.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her Tokyo victory has already raised the expectations surrounding Japan\u2019s next generation.
