The Buffalo Sabres are gearing up for a unique preseason experience – a trip to Europe for the 2024 NHL Global Series Challenge.

Their first stop? Munich, Germany, on September 27th. This isn’t just any game for forward JJ Peterka, though. It’s a homecoming.

The Sabres will be facing off against Peterka’s former team, EHC Red Bull München, in his hometown – and all during the legendary Oktoberfest festivities!

Sabres Prepare for Lederhosen Glory (and Maybe Some Beer)

Yes, you read that right. The Sabres plan to embrace the Bavarian culture by rocking traditional lederhosen during their downtime. Even the towering goalie Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen seems onboard, despite the potential sizing challenges.

A Bonding Experience Beyond the Ice

This trip presents a fantastic opportunity for the Sabres to bond as a team. With two games in Europe (including one against the New Jersey Devils in Prague), the players will have ample time to connect outside of the rink.

Peterka’s Special Homecoming

For Peterka, this trip is particularly meaningful. He grew up cheering for EHC Red Bull München, and later played for them himself. Now, he gets to return and play against his former team in front of his hometown crowd.

Gathering Intel (and Maybe Some Nostalgia)

Peterka hasn’t just been reminiscing about his childhood team. He’s been working out with EHC München this summer and even attending their meetings, gathering intel for the big game!

A New Arena and a New Chapter

This game will be the first ever sporting event held at SAP Garden, Munich’s brand new 12,500-seat arena. Peterka is excited to experience the atmosphere and hopes this event will spark interest in hockey among local fans.

Friendly Competition with a Competitive Edge

While the game might be considered a “friendly” for EHC Red Bull München, Peterka acknowledges they’ll be extra motivated to beat an NHL team. He anticipates a great game and hopes it will leave a lasting positive impact on the city.

Business Trip with a Side of Fun

Despite the excitement of the trip, the Sabres know it’s ultimately a business trip. They’re focused on taking the next step as a team and ending their long playoff drought. However, they also plan to enjoy the unique cultural experience and team-building opportunities.

Team Bonding Through Lederhosen and Steins?

Luukkonen believes the off-ice activities will benefit their on-ice performance. Spending time together outside their usual routine will strengthen their bond as a team.

The Great Lederhosen Debate

Of course, everyone wants to know who will rock the lederhosen best (and worst) on the Sabres. Peterka predicts Alex Tuch will be the most stylish, while Mattias Samuelsson might be the funniest sight.

This trip promises to be a unique blend of hockey, cultural immersion, and team bonding. It’s a homecoming for Peterka, a chance for the Sabres to showcase their skills on a new stage, and a potential spark for the sport of hockey in Munich. So,grab your steins (or hockey jerseys) and get ready for a memorable event!

Get ready for some hockey and a whole lot of fun!
