Double jumps are a fundamental element in figure skating, requiring precise technique, power, and coordination. Incorporating these three drills into your training routine can help you improve your double jumps and take your skating to the next level.

1. Edge Jumps:

  • Purpose: Develop edge control and power for takeoffs.
  • How to: Practice jumping on both edges (inside and outside) of your blade, focusing on maintaining a strong and balanced position.
  • Progression: Gradually increase the height and distance of your jumps.

2. Ripe Jumps:

  • Purpose: Improve leg strength and flexibility, essential for executing powerful jumps.
  • How to: Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and loop a resistance band around your ankles. Jump up, spreading your legs as wide as possible while pulling the band upwards.
  • Progression: Increase the resistance of the band or try performing ripe jumps with a medicine ball.

3. Jump Simulator:

  • Purpose: Practice the entire jump sequence, from takeoff to landing.
  • How to: Stand in front of a mirror and visualize the jump. Perform the takeoff, rotation, and landing movements slowly and deliberately.
  • Progression: Gradually increase the speed and height of your simulated jumps.

Remember to warm up properly before practicing these drills and to listen to your body to avoid injuries. Consistent practice and attention to detail are key to mastering double jumps in figure skating.
