Figure skating jumps are categorized by their number of rotations and the type of takeoff. Let’s break down the basics:

Single Jumps

These are the foundational jumps in figure skating. They involve one full rotation in the air before landing.

The Axel: The Odd One Out

The Axel is unique among jumps because it takes off from a forward outside edge, unlike other jumps which take off from a backward edge. It’s considered the most difficult jump to master due to its different takeoff position.

  • Single Axel: One and a half rotations.
  • Double Axel: Two and a half rotations.
  • Triple Axel: Three and a half rotations.

Double Jumps

These jumps involve two full rotations in the air before landing. They are more challenging than single jumps and require greater height and speed. Common double jumps include:

  • Double toe loop
  • Double salchow
  • Double loop
  • Double flip
  • Double Lutz

Triple Jumps

These jumps are incredibly demanding, requiring exceptional strength, flexibility, and precision. They involve three full rotations in the air. Common triple jumps include:

  • Triple toe loop
  • Triple salchow
  • Triple loop
  • Triple flip
  • Triple Lutz

Note: While quadruple jumps have been attempted and landed by a few elite skaters, they are extremely rare and beyond the scope of most skaters.

Remember: The order of difficulty generally follows this pattern: single jump, double jump, triple jump. However, the Axel is always considered more difficult than any other jump of the same rotation due to its unique takeoff.
