The ice is set, and the lights are dimmed for a historic milestone in figure skating. As the ISU World Junior Figure Skating Championships 2026 kicks off in Tallinn, Estonia, the sport celebrates its 50th anniversary by showcasing the most elite young talent on the planet. From March 3 to 8, nearly 200 skaters from 43 nations will descend upon the Tondiraba Ice Hall, offering fans a definitive look at the champions who will likely dominate the 2030 Winter Olympics.
The headline of the week is undoubtedly Japan’s Mao Shimada. Already the most decorated junior in history, Shimada is chasing an unprecedented fourth consecutive World Junior title. Her technical arsenal—featuring both the Triple Axel and the Quadruple Toe Loop—sets a bar that few can reach. However, the “Junior Queen” faces stiff competition from South Korea’s Yuseong Kim and fellow Japanese skater Mei Okada, both of whom are eager to disrupt the record books.
In the Men’s category, a high-stakes duel is reigniting. Defending champion Rio Nakata (JPN) enters with a chip on his shoulder after taking silver at the Junior Grand Prix Final. He faces his primary rival, Minkyu Seo (KOR), who currently holds the momentum of a gold-medal win from December. American standout Jacob Sanchez also looms large, bringing senior-level experience to his quest for the podium.
The 50th-anniversary championships will crown entirely new champions in the tactical disciplines. In Pairs, China’s Rui Guo and Yiwen Zhang are the heavy favorites, armed with a breathtaking quad twist that separates them from the field. They will be challenged by Canada’s seasoned duo Ava Kemp and Yohnatan Elizarov.
Ice Dance is equally unpredictable. With all of last year’s medalists moving to the senior ranks, the door is wide open. Americans Hana Maria Aboian and Daniil Veselukhin have dominated the season thus far, but French and Ukrainian teams are within striking distance, promising a battle of artistry and precision.
Ultimately, as these young athletes take center stage in Tallinn, they aren’t just competing for medals; they are sketching the blueprint for the next decade of figure skating excellence.
