In an Olympics where technical gravity is constantly being challenged, American figure skater Ilia Malinin has proven that the most powerful move on the ice isn’t a jump—it’s an embrace. The International Committee for Fair Play (CIFP), in partnership with the IOC, has officially named Malinin the recipient of the Milano Cortina 2026 Fair Play Award. This prestigious honor recognizes Malinin’s profound sportsmanship following the Men’s Individual event, where he demonstrated that character shines brightest in the face of disappointment.

A Legacy Reborn in the Italian Alps

The 2026 award holds special historical weight, marking a “homecoming” for the Fair Play movement. It honors the legacy of Italian bobsleigh legend Eugenio Monti, who in 1964 became the first-ever recipient of this award in these very same mountains. Malinin was selected from a shortlist of six finalists after a dramatic performance saw him slip from first to eighth place. Instead of retreating into his own heartbreak, Malinin immediately celebrated the gold medalist, Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Shaidorov, with a warm and genuine embrace that captured the hearts of millions.

This year’s selection process saw a record-breaking level of global engagement. Total fan votes surpassed the numbers seen during the Paris 2024 Summer Games, a historic feat for a Winter edition. IOC President Kirsty Coventry noted that Malinin’s actions remind us that Olympic excellence is measured by respect and solidarity, not just podium finishes. Upon receiving the honor, Malinin shared: “Congratulating Mikhail wasn’t about the results; it was about the shared journey we take as athletes.”

Ultimately, Ilia Malinin’s gesture reminds us that while records are made to be broken, the integrity and kindness we show in our hardest moments are what truly endure in Olympic history.
