The Million-Dollar Medal: Alysa Liu’s Olympic Journey
June 03, 2026
When fans watch elite gymnasts compete, they often see only a few minutes of competition. What they do not see are the long hours of preparation that happen every day behind the scenes.
Brazilian gymnastics star Rebeca Andrade, one of the most successful artistic gymnasts of her generation, has shared details about her daily routine while preparing for major international competitions. Her schedule shows just how much dedication is required to perform at the highest level. (Resource: Harper’s Bazaar Brazil, May 2024 interview and daily schedule feature.)
Rebeca’s day begins early.
According to her published routine, she wakes up around 6:30 in the morning. One of the first things she does is take care of her dogs, Snow and Aslan. After feeding them and taking them for a walk, she has breakfast, which often includes eggs, juice, and sometimes a fruit smoothie.
While many people start their mornings checking social media, Rebeca has explained that she usually stays focused on getting ready for training instead.
By 8:00 AM, training is already underway.
Before working on skills, Rebeca begins with injury-prevention exercises and warm-ups. These sessions are extremely important because artistic gymnastics places enormous stress on the body, particularly on the knees, ankles, shoulders, and wrists.
The morning training block often lasts several hours and includes apparatus work, technical drills, routine repetitions, and skill refinement.
Elite gymnasts do not simply practice difficult skills. They repeat basic movements thousands of times to maintain consistency under competition pressure.
After the morning session, recovery becomes the priority.
Rebeca has described taking a lunch break, often enjoying simple foods such as rice and beans before resting. During intense training periods, recovery is treated almost like another training session.
Physical therapy is also a regular part of her day. Many elite gymnasts spend significant time working with physiotherapists to help prevent injuries and manage the demands of high-level training.
The second training session begins later in the day.
Rebeca’s afternoons often include strength and conditioning work followed by several additional hours of gymnastics training. Overall, her training day can extend until around 7:30 PM.
This combination of strength, power, flexibility, and technical training is what allows artistic gymnasts to perform explosive vaults, complex bar routines, and difficult tumbling passes.
One surprising aspect of Rebeca’s schedule is how many other responsibilities fit into her day.
In addition to training, she regularly attends appointments with psychologists, physiotherapists, doctors, and nutrition specialists. Media interviews and sponsorship commitments are often added between training sessions as well.
This reminds many young athletes that elite sport involves much more than what happens in the gym.
Rebeca has spoken openly about the importance of mental preparation.
Before major competitions, she focuses on controlling anxiety and staying mentally calm. She has said that talking with her mother and working with a sports psychologist helps her manage pressure. Prayer is also an important part of her routine before competitions.
This mental preparation is one reason why top gymnasts can perform difficult skills under enormous pressure.
After a long day of training, recovery continues.
Rebeca enjoys spending time with family, friends, and her dogs. She has mentioned enjoying television series, music, and quiet time at home after training. Getting enough sleep is also a major priority because recovery supports both performance and injury prevention.
Many athletes view sleep as one of the most important training tools available.
Looking at Rebeca Andrade’s daily routine reveals an important lesson.
Success in artistic gymnastics is not built through spectacular performances alone. It comes from consistent habits repeated day after day: training, recovery, mental preparation, nutrition, and rest.
The most impressive part of an elite gymnast’s day is often not a difficult skill or a medal-winning routine. It is the discipline required to maintain the same commitment every single day.
Fans often remember Olympic medals and world titles.
What they rarely see are the early mornings, long training sessions, recovery appointments, and countless hours spent refining details.
Rebeca Andrade’s daily routine offers a glimpse into the reality of elite artistic gymnastics — a sport where excellence is built through consistency long before athletes step onto the competition floor.
