The Million-Dollar Medal: Alysa Liu’s Olympic Journey
June 23, 2026
Figure skating fans will have their eyes on Kazakhstan in 2027 as Astana prepares to host the ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships for the first time. Scheduled for February 9–14, 2027, the event will bring together many of the world’s top skaters from Asia, North America, South America, Africa, and Oceania.
The announcement marks a major milestone for Kazakhstan’s growing figure skating community. According to the International Skating Union (ISU), increasing interest in the sport following Mikhail Shaidorov’s Olympic gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics helped strengthen Kazakhstan’s position as a host nation.
The ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships is one of the most important annual competitions in international figure skating.
Created in 1999, the event serves as the equivalent of the European Figure Skating Championships for countries outside Europe. Skaters from Asia, the Americas, Africa, and Oceania compete for continental titles in four disciplines: Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Pair Skating, and Ice Dance.
For many athletes, the Four Continents Championships are one of the biggest events of the season outside the Olympic Games and the World Championships.
Although national teams have not yet been selected, fans can expect many of the strongest skaters from countries such as Japan, South Korea, Kazakhstan, the United States, Canada, China, Australia, and New Zealand.
Olympic champion Mikhail Shaidorov is expected to be one of the major attractions if he competes on home ice. The championship could also feature World Championship medalists, Grand Prix Final competitors, and rising junior stars making their mark at the senior level.
The competition often showcases future Olympic contenders and some of the most technically advanced programs in the sport.
Hosting the Four Continents Championships is a significant achievement for Kazakhstan.
The event will be the largest international figure skating competition ever held in the country. It also highlights Kazakhstan’s growing role in the global skating community.
Major competitions often inspire young athletes, attract new fans, and encourage investment in sports infrastructure. Many countries have seen participation in figure skating increase after hosting major international events.
For young Kazakh skaters, watching elite athletes compete at home could become a powerful source of motivation.
Kazakhstan has a proud history in winter sports and has hosted important international competitions before, including the 2011 Asian Winter Games and the 2017 Winter Universiade.
In recent years, figure skating has received increasing attention thanks to strong performances by Kazakh athletes on the international stage. The success of Mikhail Shaidorov at the 2026 Winter Olympics introduced the sport to many new fans and demonstrated that Kazakh skaters can compete with the world’s best.
The 2027 Four Continents Championships represent another important step in that journey.
Spectators can expect six days of competition featuring breathtaking jumps, elegant spins, emotional performances, and world-class choreography.
Athletes will compete for medals while also earning valuable international ranking points and experience. The atmosphere is expected to be especially exciting as many skaters begin building momentum toward future World Championships and the 2030 Olympic cycle.
For figure skating fans across Kazakhstan and beyond, Astana 2027 promises to be one of the most anticipated events of the season.
The 2027 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships will bring some of the world’s best skaters to Astana and place Kazakhstan at the center of the international skating world.
With growing interest in the sport, passionate fans, and a recent Olympic champion inspiring the next generation, the championship could become a defining moment for figure skating in Kazakhstan.
