5 Skills Named After Olympic Gymnasts
October 31, 2026
Skye Blakely knew she would compete on vault, bars and beam in Rotterdam. Whether she would add floor, and so contest the all-around, was still undecided until the night before team qualification. When the U.S. coaches announced the lineups, she learned she would do all four events. She was simply grateful for the chance, and she could not have guessed how the week would end.
Blakely left the 2026 World Gymnastics Championships with all-around gold, team silver, and bronze on vault and uneven bars. She won more medals than any other woman in Rotterdam and was the only one to qualify for four individual event finals.
That puts her among the most decorated American gymnasts ever. She is the fourth U.S. woman with at least four medals at one World Championships, after Simone Biles, Nastia Liukin and Rebecca Bross. She is also the ninth American woman to win a world all-around title. And she is the first gymnast to win a world all-around title in the same calendar year she competed in NCAA gymnastics.
In June 2024, Blakely was a leading contender for the Olympic team. On the final day of podium training before the Olympic Trials, she tore her Achilles, which ended her Paris hopes. It followed a serious injury in 2021.
She made her third U.S. Worlds team in 2025 but competed only on bars and beam. She returned to elite all-around competition in August 2026 at the U.S. Championships, finishing seventh. Rotterdam was only her fifth elite all-around meet since the injury, and she is still holding back some difficulty.
Blakely says her focus was to take power away from nerves, fears and doubts and give it to belief, confidence and faith. She admits she has often come close to big results in her career. This time everything came together at the right moment.
After her last routine on floor, she was already emotional about her surgeries and recovery. Then she saw her name in first place on the big screen. She had begun gymnastics at age 3 alongside her sister Sloane, later a Florida All-American, and as a child she had looked through gymnastics magazines dreaming of this. Her mother, Stephanie, who has seen the highs and lows, was there to share it.
The all-around final was only part of the week. Vault, bars and beam finals were still ahead. Blakely was at the arena doing drug testing around 12:15 a.m. after her gold, but she let herself celebrate before turning to the next day. She admits she was tired and sore, but she chose to push through, and she won two more bronze medals.
Between competitions she also kept up with her college classes. She made infographics and completed quizzes, assignments and discussions, helped by flexible professors.
Blakely joins Leanne Wong as the only gymnasts to medal in the world all-around final in the same year they competed collegiately. Wong won all-around silver in 2021 and 2025. Bridget Sloan and Morgan Hurd won world all-around gold before coming to Florida. Kayla DiCello, a 2021 all-around bronze medalist, will join Blakely on the 2027 Gators.
As the oldest member of the U.S. team, Blakely took on a leadership role in Rotterdam, and the Americans’ close bond helped them win team silver. She wants to bring that spirit to the Gators this NCAA season. First she is taking a week off. After competing with elite difficulty, she can ease it back and refine details for the college season. The experience has also left her confident she can handle hard things.
