A Rewarding Decision

Tavares, a Toronto native, reflected on his choice to leave the New York Islanders and join the Maple Leafs in 2018. Despite falling short of a Stanley Cup championship, he described his experience in Toronto as exceeding expectations, both on and off the ice. He highlighted the opportunity to play for his hometown team and the joy of raising his family close to extended relatives.

Strong Performance and Potential Future

Tavares is having a successful season with the Maple Leafs, ranking third on the team in scoring. Coach Craig Berube praised his work ethic and well-rounded play. At 34, Tavares shows no signs of slowing down and is nearing several milestones, including potentially surpassing Doug Gilmour on the Maple Leafs’ all-time scoring list.

Open to Negotiations

While acknowledging his deep appreciation for his time with the Islanders, Tavares remains focused on the future and expressed a strong desire to re-sign with the Maple Leafs. Negotiations are likely to take place once the season concludes.
