Longtime defenseman Marc Staal has announced his retirement from the NHL after 17 seasons. He’ll remain within the sport though, transitioning to a new role as a player development assistant with the New York Rangers, the team that drafted him in 2005.

Staal, 37, spent the first 13 seasons of his career with the Rangers, carving his name into team history. He ranks sixth in games played (892) and second in blocked shots (1,162). He also holds the third spot for most playoff games by a Rangers skater (107).

Staal’s contributions extend beyond statistics. He was a key player in the Rangers’ run to the 2014 Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to the Los Angeles Kings.

In his new role, Staal will utilize his experience to mentor and guide young defensemen across the Rangers organization.

Staal’s NHL journey wasn’t limited to New York. He spent two seasons with the Detroit Red Wings and most recently played 35 games for the Philadelphia Flyers last season. However, his most significant playoff experience came with the Rangers, where he played in all but 21 of his 128 career playoff games.

Throughout his career, Staal amassed 234 points (53 goals, 181 assists) in 1,136 regular-season games. He also boasts a +52 plus/minus rating.

Staal’s retirement marks the end of an impressive NHL career. His dedication to the sport continues, however, as he takes on a new challenge within the Rangers organization, helping develop the next generation of defensemen.
