The Waltz Jump: Your First Flight: Often the very first jump skaters learn, the waltz jump is a great introduction to the mechanics of jumping. It’s a relatively low jump, focusing on correct take-off, rotation, and landing. The waltz jump helps skaters develop essential skills like edge control, timing, and air position, all crucial for more advanced jumps. Mastering the waltz jump builds confidence and prepares you for the next level.
The Salchow: A Building Block for Success: Once comfortable with the waltz jump, the salchow is another excellent choice for beginners. It’s a jump off a back outside edge, requiring good edge control and a strong leg push. The salchow teaches skaters how to generate rotation and maintain a tight air position. It’s also a fundamental jump used as a component in many combination jumps and more advanced single and double jumps. A solid salchow is a stepping stone to jumps like the loop and the flip.
The Toe Loop: A Gateway to Combinations: The toe loop is another jump that beginners can start working on early in their training. It is a jump off a back outside edge, assisted by a toe pick. It’s often used in combination with other jumps, making it a valuable skill to acquire. The toe loop teaches skaters how to use their toe pick for assistance in take-off and emphasizes the importance of a strong core for maintaining balance and rotation.

Beyond the Basics: As you progress, your coach will introduce you to other jumps, such as the loop, flip, and axel. However, a solid foundation in the waltz jump, salchow, and toe loop will make learning these more complex jumps much easier. Remember that every skater’s journey is unique, and your coach will tailor your training to your individual needs and abilities.
