The Minnesota Wild are laser-focused on securing the future of their star player, Kirill Kaprizov, with a long-term contract extension.
“He’s going to be the focus of what we’re going to do,” declared Wild owner Craig Leipold. “We plan to re-sign him.” Leipold emphasizes their commitment by highlighting their ability to offer the most money and term length compared to other potential suitors.
The 27-year-old forward has been a point-scoring machine for the Wild, leading the team in points for four consecutive seasons. He’s a former Calder Trophy winner and boasts impressive career totals: 330 points (tied for 12th in the NHL) and 160 goals (sixth) in 278 games.
While Kaprizov has two years remaining on his current contract, the Wild understand his desire to compete for championships. Leipold acknowledges this, stating, “He wants to win. So, we have to prove not only to him, but other UFAs that we also want to win.“
The Wild’s future looks brighter financially as well. Significant salary cap relief arrives after this season with buyouts for Zach Parise and Ryan Suter. This will provide them with more resources to pursue additional pieces for a winning team.
Head coach John Hynes highlights Kaprizov’s dedication to winning as a key factor. “That’s what’s been really impressive with him,” Hynes said. “The No. 1 thing on his mind is winning.”
With Kaprizov’s contract extension a top priority and salary cap relief on the way, the Wild are poised to make a strong push for a return to the playoffs and contend for the Stanley Cup.
