Nancy Kerrigan’s $10 Million Legacy: Success Beyond the Ice

Rhythmic gymnastics is a unique blend of sport and art, where the athlete’s body must move in perfect harmony with a piece of hand apparatus. These tools are not mere props; they are extensions of the gymnast’s movements. Under the 2025–2028 FIG Code of Points, each apparatus requires specific technical mastery, from high-flying tosses to intricate rolls.
While the Rope is currently rotated out of most senior international individual competitions, it remains a fundamental training tool. The four primary apparatuses seen on the world stage today are the hoop, ball, clubs, and ribbon.
The Hoop Made of wood or plastic, the hoop must be rigid enough to retain its shape and have an internal diameter of 80 to 90 cm. It is a versatile apparatus used for rotations around the body, high tosses, and passing movements where the gymnast slides through the hoop mid-air. It requires the athlete to maintain a perfect spatial sense to ensure the hoop remains a circular frame for their movements.
The Ball Crafted from rubber or anti-static soft plastic, the ball must weigh at least 400g. It is considered the most “fluid” apparatus, characterized by continuous rolls over the body and large, graceful throws. Unlike other tools, the ball cannot be “gripped” but must be balanced or held with an open palm, demanding exceptional sensitivity and control.
The Clubs Gymnasts use two bottle-shaped clubs simultaneously, usually made of synthetic material or wood. They are known for complex “mills” (small, rapid circles) and asymmetrical movements where each hand performs a different task. Handling two independent objects at once requires the highest level of hand-eye coordination and ambidexterity.
The Ribbon The most visual apparatus consists of a stick (cane) and a six-meter satin ribbon. The gymnast must keep the ribbon in constant motion to create spirals, snakes, and circles. If the ribbon touches the floor, stops moving, or becomes entangled, heavy deductions are applied, making it the most difficult apparatus to master under pressure.
Ultimately, the apparatus is more than an object; it is the gymnast’s partner, and mastering it is the only way to transform a physical routine into a true masterpiece of living art.
