The Minnesota Wild bolstered their defensive depth on Saturday by acquiring David Jiricek from the Columbus Blue Jackets. In exchange, the Wild sent defenseman Daemon Hunt and four draft picks to the Blue Jackets.
Jiricek, the sixth overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft, has struggled to find consistent playing time in Columbus. Despite showing promise in his draft year, he has only managed one assist in six NHL games this season. The 21-year-old defenseman spent some time in the AHL before the trade, recording three points in four games.
Minnesota Wild general manager Bill Guerin expressed his confidence in Jiricek’s potential, stating it was a “no-brainer” to give up a first-round pick for him. Guerin highlighted Jiricek’s size, high draft pedigree, and past success as reasons for the trade. He believes Jiricek will bring a unique skillset to the Wild’s defensive lineup.
Both teams received additional assets in the trade. The Blue Jackets acquired a first-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft, along with picks in the 2026 and 2027 drafts. The Wild also received a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft. The Blue Jackets also welcomed defenseman Daemon Hunt, who has played limited NHL games but has shown promise in the AHL.
