The Buffalo Sabres are in dire need of a turnaround. Mired in an 11-game losing streak, coach Lindy Ruff has turned to the team’s veteran core for a solution.

Leaders Take Charge

Ruff has emphasized the importance of leadership from veterans like captain Rasmus Dahlin and alternates Tage Thompson, Alex Tuch, Dylan Cozens, and Mattias Samuelsson. “It’s you guys,” Ruff declared, “you’re the guys that have to be the difference-makers.”

The Sabres haven’t just been losing, they’ve been struggling to compete. Outscored 45-24 during the streak, the team has repeatedly relinquished leads.

Ownership Steps In

In an attempt to jolt the team, owner Terry Pegula met with the players before their game against the Montreal Canadiens. While the details of the conversation remain private, players acknowledged its significance.

Dahlin’s Return a Boost

A potential bright spot on the horizon is the expected return of star defenseman Rasmus Dahlin. Out for seven games with back spasms, Dahlin’s leadership and on-ice presence could be a turning point.

Looking Forward, Not Back

Although frustrated by the losing streak, the Sabres are determined to move forward. “Honestly, I think the best thing is to put [the losing streak] behind us,” stated Dahlin. “Everyone has got to put it behind them… We have to start on a new page and build.”

Can the Sabres heed their coach’s call and find their leadership within? Friday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs will be a critical test as they attempt to break the streak and rediscover their early-season success.
