5 Skills Named After Olympic Gymnasts

In a wild, back-and-forth affair, the Los Angeles Kings held off a furious comeback attempt from the Vegas Golden Knights, securing a 6-5 victory at T-Mobile Arena on Sunday. Despite Tomas Hertl’s impressive hat trick, the Kings managed to maintain their early lead and capture their second consecutive win in a back-to-back set.
The Kings surged ahead early, scoring three unanswered goals in the first and early second periods. Anze Kopitar opened the scoring with a deflection, followed by Brandt Clarke’s backhand goal and Quinton Byfield’s tip-in. The offensive outburst put the Kings in a commanding position.
However, the Golden Knights responded with a determined push. Nicolas Roy and Tomas Hertl narrowed the gap, bringing Vegas within one goal. Warren Foegele’s late second-period goal provided a crucial cushion for the Kings, heading into the third with a 4-2 advantage.
The scoring continued in the third, with Trevor Moore extending the Kings’ lead. Hertl’s power-play goal and Adrian Kempe’s response kept the game exciting. Brandon Saad and Hertl’s third goal, completing his seventh career hat trick, brought Vegas within one goal in the closing minutes. Ultimately, the Kings held on for the 6-5 victory.
“Situationally, on this back-to-back, coming in here against a really good team and playing a really good team [Saturday], we’re put in a tough spot,” Clarke said. “It just proves we can get it done when times are tough. This isn’t the typical low-scoring Kings win, but we’ll take them however they come.”
The Kings’ offensive explosion was a departure from their usual style, but they capitalized on their opportunities. “Everyone was on their toes. It seemed like pucks were getting to the net. It creates a lot of chaos, and it puts their defenders on their heels,” Foegele said.
For the Golden Knights, despite the loss, Hertl’s performance was a highlight. “We put the puck behind them, hold the puck, and make some plays,” Hertl said. “In the first, we just didn’t skate, hold it too much, lose it in neutral zone and give them easy entries. In the second, it was a way different hockey team, and obviously, to come pretty close, it was a good fight. But it [stinks] to lose them three times in a row.”
The Kings won the season series 3-1, taking the final three games. “Entertaining, first of all,” Kings coach Jim Hiller said. “You can throw the score out in probably in all four games against Vegas and say, ‘You know what, there were four pretty good hockey games.’ We got on the right side a couple of them. All four games were just good games. Nobody expected 11 to win tonight. That’s usually not our style nor theirs. Good on us to hang on at the end.”
