5 Skills Named After Olympic Gymnasts
June 18, 2025

On June 18, 2025, Sam Bennett etched his name into hockey history by winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Florida Panthers forward’s standout performance, capped by a 5-1 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in Game 6 of the Final, helped the Panthers secure their second consecutive Stanley Cup title.
Bennett’s postseason was nothing short of spectacular. He led the NHL with 15 goals, including five in the Cup Final against the Oilers. His 13 road goals set an NHL record for a single postseason, showcasing his clutch scoring ability away from home. “It’s a huge honor, but there truly are 25 MVPs on this team,” Bennett said humbly, emphasizing the Panthers’ collective effort.
His 22 points (15 goals, seven assists) in 23 playoff games tied for fourth on the team. Beyond scoring, Bennett’s physicality and presence were undeniable, with 103 hits ranking second league-wide. Panthers defenseman Seth Jones praised him, saying, “He’s not just about goals and playmaking, but the physicality, the presence on the ice. Opponents know when he’s out there.”
Bennett’s journey to this pinnacle began when he joined the Panthers via trade from the Calgary Flames in 2021. Since then, he’s become a cornerstone of Florida’s rise, culminating in back-to-back championships. “This is the team I love to play for. These are my brothers,” he said, reflecting on his transformation.
At 28, Bennett is the first Panther to win the Conn Smythe, a stark contrast to last season when Oilers’ Connor McDavid claimed it in a losing effort. His regular season career-high 51 points foreshadowed his playoff dominance. As he approaches unrestricted free agency on July 1, Bennett remains focused on the moment. “Competing for a Stanley Cup has always been my passion,” he said.
Coach Paul Maurice lauded Bennett’s work ethic, noting, “There’s a lot of heaviness he had to unload, a lot of work that went into it.” Bennett’s blend of speed, physicality, and scoring touch made him a playoff juggernaut, earning him a place among elite active players like Zach Hyman, Alex Ovechkin, and Sidney Crosby, who’ve hit the 15-goal playoff mark.
As Bennett celebrates his second Cup and the Conn Smythe, his future is uncertain, but his legacy with the Panthers is secure. “I always believed in myself, but I didn’t know how hard it would be,” he said. “I’m super grateful to be here.”
