The global spotlight of under-20 hockey shifts to the United States this holiday season, as the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship prepares to drop the puck across two Minnesota cities. From December 26, 2025, to January 5, 2026, St. Paul and Minneapolis will host the 50th edition of the prestigious tournament, with games played at the Grand Casino Arena (St. Paul) and 3M Arena at Mariucci (Minneapolis).

This marks the seventh time the U.S. has hosted the tournament, and the host nation carries the weight of history—and expectation—as two-time defending champions.

Team USA Seeks Unprecedented Third Consecutive Gold

The pressure is squarely on Team USA as they seek a historic third straight gold medal. They are placed in Group A alongside European rivals Sweden, Slovakia, Switzerland, and Germany. The Americans will benefit from playing their entire preliminary round schedule at the Grand Casino Arena, offering them a significant home-ice advantage.

Their tournament begins on December 26 with a test against Germany at 6:00 p.m. ET. The pivotal Group A showdown—a potential battle for first place—is scheduled for December 31, when the U.S. faces arch-rival Sweden (6:00 p.m. ET). Fans are expecting a high-scoring tournament, featuring top U.S. prospects like defensemen Cole Hutson and a roster predominantly composed of highly touted NHL draft picks.

Canada Aims to Rebound in Group B

Canada, grouped in Group B with Finland, Czechia, Latvia, and newly promoted Denmark, faces a strong challenge as they aim to snap a two-year medal drought. They will play their preliminary games at 3M Arena at Mariucci.

Canada’s tournament starts against Czechia on December 26 (8:30 p.m. ET). Their most anticipated group stage game is the classic North American vs. European rivalry match against Finland on December 31 (8:30 p.m. ET), a crucial test of their readiness for the knockout rounds. Key to Canada’s success will be the performance of top prospect Gavin McKenna, who headlines a strong roster looking for redemption.
