Artyom Levshunov, the Chicago Blackhawks’ second overall pick in the 2024 draft, isn’t fazed by the pressure of joining a team rebuilding for the playoffs.

“Hockey is our passion,” the 18-year-old defenseman said. “We just need to focus on playing the right way.”

This season, Levshunov will have the exciting opportunity to play alongside superstar center Connor Bedard, who took the NHL by storm last year. Bedard, the 2023 first overall pick, led all rookies with 61 points and captured the Calder Trophy as Rookie of the Year.

While Levshunov’s immediate impact might not match Bedard’s explosive debut, the Blackhawks hope these two young talents will become the foundation for a future Stanley Cup contender.

Ready for the NHL Stage

Levshunov stands out as a draft-ready prospect with impressive size (6’2″, 208 lbs), strong skating ability, and well-developed skills. As a freshman at Michigan State, he tied for ninth among NCAA defensemen with 35 points and earned Big Ten Rookie and Defensive Player of the Year honors.

“He’s got the size, the skating, and that competitive drive,” said Blackhawks assistant GM Mark Eaton. “He wants the puck, he wants to make a difference, and he rises to the occasion in big moments. Plus, he’s defensively sound, which is crucial for a young defenseman.”

Levshunov spent his offseason training in North America, attending development camp, working out in Chicago, and training with professional players in Florida. He’s back in Chicago, focused on preparing for the season with just a brief break for the NHL Rookie Showcase.

Building a Connection

Levshunov has begun forming a bond with Bedard. They met briefly after the draft when Levshunov’s name was called, and they’ve stayed in touch via text messages.

“He texted me during development camp,” Levshunov said. “Just checking in and seeing how things were going.”

While they haven’t hit the ice together yet, Levshunov has already envisioned how their styles can complement each other.

“Bedard’s an incredible player,” Levshunov said. “I admire his talent on and off the ice. I can’t wait to play with him. My goal is to support him offensively and create scoring opportunities, and I’m sure he’ll help me develop my game as well.”

Levshunov’s arrival signals a new chapter for the Blackhawks. With a focus on development and a budding young core, the future looks bright for Chicago.
