The Washington Capitals extended their home winning streak to five games with a 6-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night. Alex Ovechkin, chasing the NHL’s all-time goals record, had a goal and two assists for the Capitals.
Ovechkin’s linemate, Aliaksei Protas, echoed the excitement surrounding the veteran scorer. “He celebrates like it’s his first NHL goal,” Protas said. “That’s what makes him an unbelievable player and scorer.”
Tom Wilson and Protas each had a goal and an assist for Washington. Connor McMichael and Jakub Vrana also found the net for the Capitals, who capitalized on defensive miscues by the Canadiens.
Montreal’s Cole Caufield continued his hot streak, scoring his fourth goal in as many games. However, the Canadiens (4-6-1) couldn’t overcome their defensive struggles, allowing Washington to score twice in quick succession early in the third period to take the lead for good.
