The Washington Capitals made a move to bolster their center depth on Tuesday, acquiring veteran forward Lars Eller from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a 2027 third-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick.

Eller, a 35-year-old with 16 seasons of NHL experience, is no stranger to the Capitals organization. He previously spent seven seasons in Washington (2016-2023), where he played a key role in their 2018 Stanley Cup victory, contributing 18 points in 24 playoff games.

“We are excited to welcome Lars back to our organization,” said Capitals GM Chris Patrick. “This move enhances our depth at the critical center position. Lars is a versatile player, that we are confident will strengthen our team’s depth and competitiveness.”

Eller brings a wealth of experience and playoff success to Washington, having amassed 409 points (182 goals, 227 assists) in 1053 career games. He’s played for five different teams throughout his career, but his return to the Capitals signifies a homecoming for a player who helped them achieve their ultimate goal.

The Capitals, currently sitting third in the Metropolitan Division (10-4-0 record), hope Eller’s experience and leadership will be a valuable asset as they strive for another championship run.
