Malinski Signs $4.75M Annual Extension

Sam Malinski is officially staying in the Mile High City. The Colorado Avalanche announced Tuesday that the 27-year-old defenseman has signed a four-year contract extension, rewarding his breakout performance and steady defensive development. While financial terms remain undisclosed, the deal ensures that a key piece of Colorado’s blue line remains under team control through 2030.

This season has been a revelation for Malinski, who has shattered his previous NHL career highs with 21 assists and 24 points in just 50 games. Beyond the scoresheet, his impact is felt in his defensive reliability; he currently boasts an impressive plus-26 rating while averaging 16:43 of ice time. His ability to move the puck efficiently has made him an indispensable asset in the Avalanche’s high-speed system.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent in March 2023, Malinski’s journey to a long-term NHL contract is a testament to his work ethic. Avalanche General Manager Chris MacFarland praised his growth, noting, “His commitment to the defensive side of the game has turned him into a reliable defenseman for us.” Malinski was set to become an unrestricted free agent this July, making this mid-season signing a priority for the front office.

Coach Jared Bednar echoed those sentiments, calling the extension “well-deserved.” Bednar highlighted Malinski’s rapid evolution, stating that the defender has been getting better “month over month.” The coaching staff has been particularly impressed by his defensive positioning, which has evolved significantly since the start of the current campaign.

With 149 career games and 49 points under his belt, Malinski is no longer just a depth piece; he is a core component of the roster. His skating ability and puck-moving skills align perfectly with the Avalanche’s identity, providing a stable presence behind their offensive superstars. This signing provides the team with valuable cost-certainty on the back end for years to come.

As the Avalanche push toward another deep playoff run, having Malinski locked in removes a potential off-season distraction. Fans can expect to see much more of the undrafted standout as he continues to refine his game and contribute to Colorado’s quest for another Stanley Cup.
