Leon Draisaitl scored the game-winning goal just 18 seconds into overtime to lift the Edmonton Oilers to a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday. The win came on Draisaitl’s 29th birthday, extending his point streak to six games.
The Red Wings got off to a strong start, with J.T. Compher scoring early in the first period. However, the Oilers battled back with goals from Draisaitl and Evan Bouchard. Detroit regained the lead in the second period thanks to Andrew Copp, but Bouchard’s blast in the third tied things up again.
With the game seemingly headed for a shootout, Draisaitl capitalized on a 4-on-3 power play in overtime. Connor McDavid found Mattias Ekholm streaking to the net, and Ekholm’s perfect pass set up Draisaitl for an easy tap-in. The win improves the Oilers’ record to 4-4-1.
