The Calgary Flames kicked off their season with a dominant 6-3 win over the Philadelphia Flyers at Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday night. Jonathan Huberdeau spearheaded the Flames’ offense with a two-goal, two-assist performance.
Huberdeau Sets the Tone Early
Huberdeau opened the scoring for the Flames midway through the first period with a fortuitous deflection off his shoulder. He followed that up by assisting on MacKenzie Weegar’s power-play goal later in the period, giving Calgary a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Flames Extend Lead on Power Play
The Flames capitalized on their power-play opportunities, with Nazem Kadri adding another power-play goal in the second period. Mikael Backlund extended the lead to 4-2 in the third period on a breakaway with Blake Coleman.
Flyers Show Fight, But Fall Short
Despite falling behind early, the Flyers displayed resilience. Travis Konecny netted two goals, including a short-handed tally, while Joel Farabee also found the net. Rookie forward Matvei Michkov even chipped in with his first NHL point, an assist on Konecny’s second goal.
Flames Close Out Strong
Huberdeau put the game out of reach with a beautiful one-timer in the third period, followed by an empty-net goal from Kadri to seal the victory.
Looking Ahead
The win marks a strong start to the season for the Flames, who are looking to build on their impressive performance last year. The Flyers, on the other hand, will need to address their penalty issues and tighten up defensively as they look for their first win of the season.
