How Long Should You Warm Up?

Every figure skater knows the importance of a good warm-up. But how long should it really be? The answer isn’t one-size-fits-all, but here’s a guide to help you find the sweet spot.

Why Warm Up?

Before we talk time, let’s talk purpose. A proper warm-up does more than just prevent injury; it:

  • Increases blood flow: Warmer muscles are more flexible and less prone to strain.
  • Enhances performance: Improved range of motion leads to better technique and power.
  • Prepares the mind: A focused warm-up helps you mentally prepare for the session ahead.

How Long is Long Enough?

A good rule of thumb is 10-15 minutes of dynamic stretching before hitting the ice. This could include:

  • Leg swings: Forward, backward, and side-to-side.
  • Arm circles: Forward and backward.
  • Torso rotations: Gentle twists from side to side.
  • High knees and butt kicks: To get the heart rate up.

The “More” Factor

For more intense training sessions or competitions, you might consider a longer warm-up. This could include:

  • Light cardio: Jumping jacks, jogging in place, or even a short bike ride.
  • Specific drills: Practice simple spins or jumps at a low intensity.

When to Adjust

Your ideal warm-up time can change based on:

  • Your fitness level: Beginners might need a slightly longer warm-up.
  • The weather: Colder temperatures may require more time to warm up the muscles.
  • Your personal preference: Some skaters feel more comfortable with a longer, more thorough warm-up.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing is to listen to your body. If you feel tight or stiff, add a few more minutes to your warm-up. If you feel ready to go, don’t overthink it. The goal is to be prepared and prevent injury, not to spend hours stretching.

Remember: Consistency is key! Make warming up a regular part of your routine, and you’ll reap the benefits both on and off the ice.
