The Carolina Hurricanes, despite the debut of their newly acquired forwards Mikko Rantanen and Taylor Hall, fell short to the New York Islanders in an overtime thriller. The final score was 3-2 for the Islanders.

Rantanen played nearly 19 minutes and had five shots on goal, while Hall played for over 11 minutes. Both players were part of a three-team trade that took place on Friday.

The Islanders won their fourth consecutive game thanks to a goal by Brock Nelson at the 2:03 mark of overtime. Nelson beat Pyotr Kochetkov on a breakaway to secure the victory.

The Hurricanes, whose four-game winning streak ended with this loss, were led by goals from Jack Roslovic and Sebastian Aho.  Islanders’ goalie Ilya Sorokin made a key save in overtime to preserve the win after Hogberg left the game with an upper-body injury.
