5 Skills Named After Olympic Gymnasts

Some stories in hockey feel like they were meant to happen. For J.T. Miller, being named captain of the New York Rangers is one of them.
On Tuesday, the Rangers announced that Miller, 32, will serve as the 29th captain in team history. It’s a role filled with prestige and responsibility, and one that brings his career back to where it all began. Drafted by New York in 2011, Miller spent the early years of his career in Rangers blue, even skating in the 2014 Stanley Cup Final. After several seasons away, he returned to Madison Square Garden last January in a trade with Vancouver — and now he wears the “C.”
“Since his arrival last season, J.T. immediately became a leader for our group and exemplifies how we want to conduct ourselves both on and off the ice,” said Rangers general manager Chris Drury. “We’re confident he will continue to represent our organization with class, commitment, and integrity.”
Miller’s impact was immediate upon his return. He recorded 35 points in just 31 games after the trade, finishing the year with 70 points overall. He was also one of the most well-rounded forwards in the NHL: combining scoring touch, physical play, and reliability in the face-off circle. His 58.3 percent success rate on draws ranked among the league’s best, and his 160-plus hits underscored his willingness to play a complete, two-way game.
Over the course of his career, Miller has tallied 709 points (260 goals, 449 assists) in 871 games. His peak came with Vancouver in 2023-24, when he scored a career-high 37 goals and 103 points — establishing himself as one of the premier playmaking forwards in the game.
Miller’s journey to the captaincy has been shaped by more than just numbers. After leaving New York in 2018, he played pivotal roles in Tampa Bay and Vancouver, learning how to adjust his game to different systems and expectations. In Vancouver, he emerged as one of the emotional leaders of the team, often praised for his competitive fire and willingness to push teammates to be better.
That same drive has carried over into his second stint in New York, where his blend of passion, accountability, and veteran presence earned the trust of coaches and players alike.
This isn’t Miller’s first big moment in Rangers blue. As a 21-year-old, he was part of the team that reached the 2014 Stanley Cup Final, an experience that helped shape the competitor he is today. More than a decade later, he returns to Madison Square Garden as captain, prepared to guide a talented roster aiming for another deep playoff run.
For the Rangers, his appointment signals continuity with the franchise’s tradition of strong leaders, from Mark Messier and Brian Leetch to Ryan Callahan. For Miller, wearing the “C” at Madison Square Garden is not just an honor — it’s the culmination of a journey that has brought him full circle.
