The Winnipeg Jets spoiled Anders Sorensen’s debut as head coach of the Chicago Blackhawks, defeating them 4-2 at the United Center. Mark Scheifele’s third-period goal proved to be the game-winner for the Jets, who improved to 20-8-0 on the season.
The Blackhawks, struggling to find their footing, have now lost five consecutive games. They opened the scoring with goals from Alex Vlasic and Alec Martinez, but the Jets quickly responded with goals from Gabriel Vilardi, Nino Niederreiter, and Scheifele. Mason Appleton added an empty-net goal to seal the victory for Winnipeg.
Sorensen, who replaced Luke Richardson on Thursday, acknowledged the emotional aspect of his first game, but emphasized the need to focus on the task at hand. The team faced a significant challenge with the early injury to starting goaltender Petr Mrazek, forcing Arvid Soderblom into action.
The Jets, aware of the potential impact of the coaching change on the Blackhawks, focused on executing their game plan and ultimately emerged victorious.
The loss extends the Blackhawks’ losing streak and adds to their mounting challenges. They will look to regroup during a three-game road trip, starting with a matchup against the New York Rangers.
