September 12, 2024

The Toronto Maple Leafs made a pair of roster moves on Wednesday, signing veteran forward Max Pacioretty to a professional tryout (PTO) contract and defenseman Jani Hakanpaa to a one-year deal.
Pacioretty, 35, is looking to re-establish himself after a season marred by injury. He played only 47 games for the Washington Capitals in 2023-24, battling back from a torn Achilles tendon. Despite the limited action, Pacioretty still managed to contribute 23 points (4 goals, 19 assists).
The talented forward boasts a lengthy career with 668 points (330 goals, 338 assists) in 902 regular-season games across four teams: the Montreal Canadiens (his draft team), Vegas Golden Knights, Carolina Hurricanes, and the Capitals.Additionally, he’s collected 50 points in 78 playoff games.
Jani Hakanpaa, 32, adds depth and experience to the Toronto blue line. He joins the Maple Leafs after a 12-point (2 goals,10 assists) season with the Dallas Stars. Injuries hampered his playoff run, however.
Hakanpaa brings a veteran presence with his one-year, $1.47 million contract. He’ll look to solidify the Toronto defense alongside established players.
The Maple Leafs have shown a willingness to explore options with these signings. Pacioretty will need to impress during his PTO to earn a full contract, while Hakanpaa will compete for playing time on the defense.
These moves demonstrate the Maple Leafs’ commitment to building a competitive roster for the upcoming season.
