The Edmonton Oilers secured their future on Tuesday, signing star forward Leon Draisaitl to an eight-year, $112 million contract. The deal carries an average annual value of $14 million.
Draisaitl, 28, was entering the final season of his previous contract and could have become a free agent next summer. However, his commitment reflects his desire to remain an Oiler for life.
“I take great pride in being an Oiler and always wear my heart on my sleeve,” Draisaitl said. “There’s nothing I love more than wearing that jersey and representing our city and our great fans.”
This extension comes after a heartbreaking Stanley Cup Final run for the Oilers, where they fell to the Florida Panthers in Game 7. Draisaitl acknowledges the unfinished business but sees this contract as an opportunity to build upon last season’s success.
“We gathered a lot of experience, a lot of positive signs over our playoff run and we have a big chunk of the group back,” he said. “I think we’re ready to attack again.”
Draisaitl’s impact on the Oilers goes beyond points. He’s a key contributor, leading the team to the playoffs in five of the past six seasons. Since his debut in 2014-15, Edmonton has not missed the playoffs for more than one year.
“Players like Leon are special,” said Oilers general manager Stan Bowman. “He’s a competitor, he wants to win, and he wants to win for the Edmonton Oilers.”
With Draisaitl locked up, the Oilers have solidified their core and signaled their championship aspirations. The focus now shifts to building upon their recent success and bringing the Stanley Cup to Edmonton.
