5 Skills Named After Olympic Gymnasts
January 12, 2025

Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin has etched his name even deeper into NHL history books. On Saturday night, Ovechkin became only the second player in league history to score at least 20 goals in 20 consecutive seasons. This incredible feat puts him in elite company alongside the legendary Gordie Howe, who achieved the same milestone in 22 straight seasons from 1949-50 to 1970-71.
Ovechkin’s 20th goal of the season was a symbolic one, coming as an empty-netter in the Capitals’ 4-1 victory over the Nashville Predators. This goal also holds significance beyond the 20-goal mark, bringing his career total to 873. With just 22 goals separating him from Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record of 894, Ovechkin continues his relentless pursuit of the ultimate prize.
Despite missing 16 games earlier this season due to injury, the 39-year-old forward has been on fire. He’s reached the 20-goal mark in just 27 games, showcasing his unwavering goal-scoring prowess. Throughout his remarkable career, Ovechkin has never dipped below 24 goals in a season, with the exception of the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season.
This latest achievement further cements Ovechkin’s legacy as one of the greatest goal scorers the NHL has ever seen. He already holds the record for most 30-goal seasons (18) and 40-goal seasons (13), and is tied with Gretzky and Mike Bossy for most 50-goal seasons (nine). With his dedication and goal-scoring ability, Ovechkin’s pursuit of Gretzky’s record promises to be an exciting storyline for the remainder of the season.
