The elite figure skating season is reaching a fever pitch, and this week the global spotlight swings to the Canadian Prairies! Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, is set to host the 2025 Skate Canada International from October 31 to November 2 at the SaskTel Centre.

This event is far more than just a competition; it’s the third, critically important stop in the prestigious ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating series. Here, the world’s top athletes fight for valuable points needed to secure a spot at the exclusive Grand Prix Final, which will be held in Nagoya, Japan, this December. Expect sparks to fly and records to be threatened as the skaters unveil their programs across all four disciplines.

The Grand Prix Format: A Critical Stepping Stone

Skate Canada International is one of only six major events on the ISU calendar. Skaters competing in this series are selected based on their results from the World Championships and their global rankings. This competition is essential for athletes to test out their new programs, perfect technical elements under high pressure, and build momentum toward the Final.

Furthermore, with the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics just one season away, these Grand Prix events serve as the most important gauge of an athlete’s readiness for the Olympic year. Every performance provides crucial feedback and sets the tone for the rest of the season.

The Headliners: Star Power on the Ice

The tournament features a stellar cast of reigning champions and rising talents:

  • Men’s Singles: All eyes will be on two-time World Champion Ilia Malinin (USA), known universally as the “Quad God” for his unprecedented jumping ability, including the historic quadruple Axel. Fresh off a dominant win at the Grand Prix de France, Malinin faces a strong challenge from Canadian stars like two-time National Champion Roman Sadovsky.
  • Pairs: Canada’s own reigning World Champions, Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps, are poised to thrill the home crowd. They will battle formidable international rivals, notably World Silver Medalists Minerva Fabienne Hase and Nikita Volodin (GER), in what is expected to be a dramatic and tight contest.
  • Ice Dance: Two-time World Silver Medalists Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier (CAN) anchor the deep Ice Dance field. They will be joined by fellow Canadian medalists Marjorie Lajoie & Zachary Lagha, guaranteeing a masterclass in seamless choreography, intricate footwork, and sheer artistry.
  • Women’s Singles: The event will feature a captivating contest between Japan’s Mone Chiba, a World Bronze Medalist, and three-time Canadian Champion Madeline Schizas. They will also be challenged by the rising American star Isabeau Levito.

The Schedule: Three Days of High-Intensity Action

The tense competition unfolds over three non-stop days:

  • Friday, October 31: The event kicks off with the Pairs Short Program and the Women’s Short Program starting at 5:00 PM CST (Central Standard Time).
  • Saturday, November 1: The intensity escalates, featuring the Men’s Short Program in the afternoon, followed by the first two medal presentations after the Pairs Free Program and the Women’s Free Program in the evening.
  • Sunday, November 2: The tournament culminates with the final two disciplines: the Men’s Free Program and the Ice Dance Free Dance, with action beginning at 12:00 PM CST.

Canadian Pride and Home Ice Advantage

For Canada, hosting this tournament is a source of national pride and a vital competitive advantage for its athletes. Canadian skaters have historically excelled in the Pairs and Ice Dance disciplines, and the palpable energy and support from the home crowd often provide the necessary emotional lift to clinch victory in tight international races. This is the perfect opportunity to witness the country’s top figure skaters battling for the highest honours on home ice.

Don’t miss this magnificent event, which promises to be one of the highlights of the figure skating season!
