The Detroit Red Wings made a move to bolster their future draft capital on Tuesday, trading defenseman Olli Maatta to the Utah Hockey Club. In exchange, Detroit receives a third-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

Maatta, a 30-year-old veteran, hasn’t recorded a point in seven games this season. However, he brings experience and offensive potential, having notched 18 points (4 goals, 14 assists) with a +14 rating in 72 games last season. This trade comes in the final year of Maatta’s two-year contract with Detroit.

The Utah Hockey Club is hoping Maatta can provide a defensive boost. Currently sitting at 4-4-2, they’ve struggled recently, losing six of their last seven games. They’ve also allowed at least four goals in six of their ten contests this season. With Maatta’s experience, they aim to shore up their defense.

Meanwhile, the Red Wings (4-4-1) are looking towards the future with this trade. They add a draft pick while continuing their recent hot streak, having gone 3-1-1 in their last five games.
