The Detroit Red Wings solidified their future on Thursday, locking down young defenseman Moritz Seider with a seven-year, $59.85 million contract. This deal carries an average annual value of $8.55 million, keeping Seider in the red and white for years to come.
The 23-year-old Seider, a restricted free agent, was a key piece missing from Red Wings training camp. Now, with this contract signed, the excitement builds for the upcoming season.
Last season, Seider established himself as a vital part of the Red Wings’ defense. He led the team in ice time per game and contributed offensively with 42 points (9 goals, 33 assists). His performance was a key reason he captured the prestigious Calder Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie in 2021-22.
“We are thrilled to have Moritz signed long-term,” said Red Wings’ general manager. “He is a cornerstone of our defense and a key part of our future.”
Seider joins fellow young star Lucas Raymond, who recently signed an eight-year contract, in committing to the Red Wings. This influx of young talent signifies a bright future for the team.
The Red Wings open their season on October 10th against the Pittsburgh Penguins, and fans can expect Seider to be a key contributor on the ice.
