The Ottawa Senators pulled off a comeback victory on Sunday night, defeating the Dallas Stars 3-2 to end their seven-game winning streak. Goalie Leevi Merilainen played a pivotal role in the win, making 24 saves and securing back-to-back victories following his shutout performance against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday.
The Stars got off to a strong start with Jason Robertson scoring in the first period. However, the Senators refused to back down. Josh Norris evened the score in the second period, followed by a quick goal from Tim Stutzle just 39 seconds later. The Senators had a chance to extend their lead further when the Stars thought they had tied the game on a power play goal, but a successful offside challenge overturned the call.
Early in the third period, Matthew Highmore put the Senators up by two with his first goal since April 2022. The Stars mounted a late push, scoring a power-play goal with their goalie pulled, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Senators’ lead. Merilainen stood tall in net, preserving the victory for Ottawa.
This win is a significant boost for the Senators, who had previously lost four straight games. They’ll look to build on this momentum as they continue their season.
