5 Skills Named After Olympic Gymnasts
November 27, 2024

Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin has become the NHL’s fastest skater among defensemen this season, reaching a blistering 24.19 miles per hour! This impressive feat, achieved during the team’s 6-4 win over the Dallas Stars, puts Slavin right behind the league leader, Nashville Predators forward Steven Stamkos (24.20 mph).
Slavin’s speed wasn’t just for show. With the Hurricanes trailing 3-1, his high-speed hustle helped shut down a scoring chance by Dallas’ Roope Hintz. This defensive play exemplifies Slavin’s well-rounded contribution, as he also recorded an assist and a season-high four shots on goal.
This record-breaking speed isn’t just a personal victory for Slavin, it’s a sign of the entire Hurricanes team’s dominance. Slavin’s mark surpasses the previous Hurricanes record held by forward Martin Necas (23.95 mph). Additionally, the Hurricanes boast the third-most instances (36) of players reaching at least 22 mph, trailing only the high-octane offenses of the Avalanche and Oilers.
The Hurricanes’ success goes beyond speed. They currently have the second-best points percentage in the NHL and lead the league in offensive zone possession and shot attempts at even strength. This well-rounded dominance positions Carolina as a serious contender for the Stanley Cup!
