Tij Iginla, the Utah Hockey Club’s historic first draft pick (6th overall in 2024), has signed a three-year entry-level contract. While financial details remain undisclosed, the young forward is excited to join the growing franchise.

“The draft night cheers were amazing,” Iginla said during Utah’s development camp. He’s impressed by the welcoming fans and sees a bright future for the team.

A Goal-Scoring Machine

The 17-year-old brings an impressive offensive pedigree. Last season with Kelowna (WHL), he tied for sixth in the league with 47 goals in 64 games. He also played a key role in Canada’s gold medal run at the U18 World Juniors, racking up 12 points (6 goals, 6 assists) in 7 games.

High Expectations and a Supportive Family

Utah’s GM, Bill Armstrong, has high hopes for Iginla. “We need a 50-goal scorer,” he said, highlighting Iginla’s talent and personality. Tij credits his father, Hockey Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla, for his development.

“He’s been an enormous help,” Tij said. He plans to spend his offseason training with his father and siblings, focusing on all aspects of his game.

Development and a Likely Return to Kelowna

While Iginla will likely return to Kelowna for at least one more season, where he’s expected to play center full-time, the Utah staff is already impressed. Lee Stempniak, Utah’s Director of Player Development, admires Iginla’s work ethic, drive, and willingness to battle in the “dirty areas” where goals are scored.

Iginla’s signing marks a significant moment for the Utah Hockey Club. This young talent, with a supportive family and a drive to succeed, could be a cornerstone for the franchise’s future.
