5 Skills Named After Olympic Gymnasts
September 27, 2024

Veteran forward Jeff Skinner has never played in a Stanley Cup Playoff game, despite a successful 14-year NHL career. That’s about to change, or at least that’s the hope, as Skinner joins the high-powered Edmonton Oilers.
Skinner boasts an impressive resume:
However, a trip to the playoffs has remained elusive.
Skinner signed a one-year, $3 million contract with the Oilers this offseason. The team is looking for a top-six forward to complement their star players, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. He’ll likely start the season alongside Draisaitl and Viktor Arvidsson, another key free agent acquisition.
“Every player wants to be on a competitive team, and I’m no different,” Skinner said. He acknowledges Edmonton’s playoff run last year and the team’s high expectations. “People saw the run they went on…the impact players they have…for me, being able to slide in and compliment those players is what I’m looking to do.”
“Skinner is a playmaker, a guy that can get Leon the puck and find open ice and can score goals,” says Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch. Skinner’s consistent scoring ability (often between 25-40 goals a season) is a valuable asset for Edmonton.
With Draisaitl’s recent contract extension solidifying the core, the Oilers are serious Stanley Cup contenders. “The expectations here are pretty clear,” Skinner said. “That’s what you want as a player; you want to be in those meaningful games.”
Despite the excitement, Skinner remains grounded. “It’s a long way,” he acknowledges. “Every team starts with zero wins.” He’s committed to putting in the work and contributing to a strong start for the team.
One thing’s for sure: Skinner’s experience and scoring prowess will be a valuable asset for the Oilers in their quest for the Stanley Cup.
